Simpson wrestlers shine at Southern Oregon Open

ASHLAND, Ore. - The Simpson University’s men’s wrestling team competed at the Southern Oregon Open Wrestling Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 16 and Sunday, Nov. 17. Nine Red Hawk grapplers placed at the invitational, which included colleges from Oregon, California, Idaho and Canada.
Simpson junior A.J. Valles became the first tournament champion in the history of the Red Hawks’ program. In his finals match, he defeated Izzak Tobin of Oregon State by an 8 to 2 decision to win the 133 lb. championship. Also bringing home championship honors was Austin Lobsinger. He overcame an early 4 to 1 deficit with a second period throw that resulted in a pin for the win.
Red Hawk 174 pounder Brady Beamon battled his way to the championship match, where he faced defending two time national champion Brock Gutches of Southern Oregon University. Beamon was making a strong showing when late in the first period he was caught with a throw and lost by pin.
Three Red Hawks had only one loss on the day and finished third in their respective weight classes. Richard Ortiz decisioned Craig Trask of Southern Oregon 9 to 3 to finish 3rd. Marcus Zachary finished third at 184 pounds with an injury default over Tuck Vanmeter. Also bringing home the third place award was Christian White. In the 197 pound consolation championship match, he defeated Stephen Wilbert of Lassen College with a 4 to 2 decision.
Other Simpson wrestlers who made it to the championship round and placed were Mason Sauseda, who placed sixth in the 125 pound weight class, Izaiah Ozuna, who placed fifth in the 141 pound weight class, and Anthony Vega, who placed fifth in the 149 pound weight class.
The Simpson wrestlers will battle San Francisco State University Gators at home in the SU gym on Thursday, Nov. 21. Action begins at 7 p.m.
