Lady Red Hawks lose conference opener to Golden Eagles

Simpson University Sports News

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s volleyball team hosted the Golden Eagles from La Sierra University on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Heritage Life Center. The Red Hawks lost their California Pacific Conference opener in three straight sets (11-25, 15-25, 19-25).

In the first set, La Sierra took an early 2-5 lead. After numerous attempts to stop the Golden Eagles’ run, Coach Kirst called a timeout with the score at 5-11. The timeout seemed to only boost La Sierra’s energy, as they continued to go on a run and won the first set 11-25.

The second set started well, as the teams remained tied. After La Sierra gained several points, a kill from Katelynne Cavalli ended the run. With the score 14-20, Coach Kirst again called a timeout, but the Golden Eagles pushed through with another set win (15-25).

In the third set, the Red Hawks had a 4-1 lead because of La Sierra attack errors. The Golden Eagles gained an 8-13 lead, before kills from freshmen Rachel Lowe and captain Jamie Pickett closed the gap. La Sierra took a timeout with the score 14-16, maintained the lead, and won 19-25.

Audrey Green had eight kills; Jessica Lombardi had five; and Lowe finished the game with four. Pickett led the team in digs with 11, and Lowe led in service aces with two.

The Red Hawks will prepare for their next game at Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Ore., at 7p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The Red Hawks hosted the Beacons earlier in the month and lost in three straight sets.
