Red Hawks lose to Bobcats in four sets

MERCED, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s volleyball team played their second away game in two days when they faced the UC Merced Bobcats on Friday, Oct. 11. Simpson lost the game in four sets (25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 24-26).
After having a slow start in the first set, the Red Hawks found themselves trailing Bobcats the majority of the game. Simpson finally found their momentum and won the first set 25-21.
In the second set, the teams were tied at 19-19. But with kills from Merced’s Valeria Martinez and Genna Garrett, the Bobcats took the second set 25-23.
In the third set, the Red Hawks found themselves down 9-3, forcing Coach Thomas Kirst to take a timeout. The Bobcats used the timeout to their advantage and pushed the lead to 14-3, forcing Kirst to call another timeout. The Red Hawks finally started to close the gap of the Bobcats’ lead, but the early deficit was too large and UC Merced won set three 25-19.
Set four was hard-fought battle on both sides. With the game tied at 22-22, kills from the Bobcats’ power hitters allowed Merced to take set four 26-24.
The Red Hawks will prepare for their next game on Friday, Oct. 18, against La Sierra University in Riverside, CA at 3 p.m. The Golden Eagles won the first meeting between the teams in three straight sets on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
