Red Hawks get conference victory against UC Merced

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s volleyball team the UC Merced Bobcats on Saturday, Oct. 26. The Red Hawks came away with the conference victory, winning in four sets (25-19, 25-13, 18-25, 25-21).
In the first set, the Red Hawks had an early 11-5 lead with aces from Audrey Green and Kelly Tycksen and kills from Katelynne Cavalli. The Bobcats were able to push through their previous errors and tie the game at 11-11. Simpson earned the 25-19 set victory with kills from power hitters Cavalli and Jessica Lombardi.
In the second set, the Red Hawks looked like a new team. They executed their offense well and won the second set 25-13. Simpson had a 16 kills in the set compared to UC Merced’s two.
Due to the success the team was having, Coach Thomas Kirst played more of his bench in the third set. UC Merced took an early 1-5 lead and continued to pull away until they took the third set 18-25.
Going back to his starting line-up, Kirst fired his girls up to finish out the game by winning the fourth set. The Red Hawks and Bobcats battled to get the lead, tying four times. With the Red Hawks leading 23-21, Cavalli and Green got two big kills to win the set 25-21 and the match.
The Red Hawks are preparing for their next match against Menlo College on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. Menlo won in four sets the first time these team met on Friday, Oct. 4.
