Red Hawks lose home opener to Beacons
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - Coach Thomas Kirst and the Simpson University women’s volleyball team hosted the Beacons from Northwest Christian University on Sunday, Sept. 1 in their home opener. The Beacons defeated the Red Hawks in three straight sets (25-18, 25-14, 25-14).
In the first set, the Red Hawks got an early lead as the Beacons had back-to back errors. The Beacons quickly pulled themselves from behind to take the lead after a 9-9 tie. With the Beacons leading 17-13, Coach Krist called a timeout and got the Red Hawks back on track. Simpson closed the four-point gap, but it wasn’t enough and Northwest Christian won 25-18.
The Beacons came out strong in the second set. Northwest Christian senior Maren Mansfield had four aces, and Simpson had no answer. After a Simpson timeout, with the score 0-6, the Red Hawks allowed one more ace before a Beacon error. With the score 1-9, sophomore Audrey Green had a powerful block to end the Beacon’s run. Northwest Christian won the second set 25-14.
In the third set, the Red Hawks came out energetic and opened the set with a 5-3 lead. The Beacons gained a 12-9 lead after multiple Simpson errors and ended the set with a 25-14 victory. Junior Jamie Pickett played a great set for Simpson by remaining consistent and having numerous saves.
The Red Hawks will get a well-deserved amount of rest and practices as they prepare for their next game on September 14 at 5 p.m. when they host the Owls of Oregon Institute of Technology. The Red Hawks and the Owls faced each other earlier this season, and the Owls came away with the 3-1 win.
