Red Hawks fall to Pioneers in straight sets

Simpson University Sports News

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s volleyball team hosted the Pioneers of Pacific Union College on Saturday, Oct. 5 and lost in three straight sets (15-25,19-25,16-25).

The Red Hawks, playing without sophomore power hitter Audrey Green and freshman middle Rachel Lowe, struggled to stop the Pioneers’ runs in the first set and were down by 10 the majority of the set. Junior Jamie Pickett got some kills, but the gap was too big for Simpson to close. Pacific Union took the first set 25-15.

In the second set, the Red Hawks went on a six point run, as freshman Aimee Belleville stepped up at the net with two crucial blocks. However, the Pioneers refused to stay down, and they tied the game at 12-12, 13-13, and 15-15. Due to Simpson’s errors, the Pioneers found themselves ahead by five (19-24) before Coach Thomas Kirst called a timeout. Pacific Union won the second set on a Red Hawk attack error (19-25).

In the third set, the Red Hawks were up 5-0, with kills from Victoria Furze and Jessica Lombardi. The Pioneers once again climbed their way back, winning the third and final set 16-25.

Pickett led both teams with nine kills. Lombardi had five kills.

The Red Hawks will look to bounce back when they travel to Rocklin, Calif., to play rival William Jessup University on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
