REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s volleyball team qualified for the 2013 California Pacific Conference women’s volleyball tournament being held at UC Merced on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16. Games will be played in the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center on Hostetler Court.

Simpson, under first-year head coach Thomas Kirst, struggled in the beginning of the season yet peaked at the perfect timing when conference play started.

Led by captains Jamie Pickett and Kelly Tycksen, the Red Hawks persevered and showed tremendous growth as the season continued on. Their leadership gave the team confidence to push through various trials.

“I feel very confident going into playoffs,” said Pickett. “As the No. 4 seed we really have nothing to lose and that can allow us to play hard and play to win. We are really focused on playing as a team and as a family no matter what happens.”

Simpson finished 5-7 in conference and 8-15 overall. Sophomore Audrey Green finished first in the California Pacific Conference in kills per set, averaging 4.2 with 285 total kills. Tycksen finished fifth overall in assists per sets, averaging 8.2 with 583 total assists.

“We have grown as a team and have gone through a lot but will continue to battle no matter what the odds are against us; we are not just teammates but a family,” said Tycksen. “I think we have a good chance in playoffs if we continue playing like one. We have a tough task ahead of us with La Sierra, but I don’t doubt that we can’t surprise them.”

The Red Hawks will play their first match of the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 15 at 12:30 p.m. against No. 1 La Sierra University. The second match of the day will be at 2:30 p.m. with No. 2 Menlo College facing No. 3 Pacific Union College
