REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s volleyball team hosted its first exhibition game of the 2013 season against the Firebirds of St. Katherine College on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Red Hawks won in three straight sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-19).
In the first set, Red Hawk senior Kelly Tycksen served first, and with a Firebird error, Simpson took the 1-0 lead. With the score tied 5-5, sophomore Katelynne Cavalli came in with a block, followed by a kill, to give Simpson the lead. Jazmin Wallace came into the game with the score tied 17-17 and scored back-to-back points before St. Katherine College called a timeout. The timeout proved ineffective for the Firebirds, as the Red Hawks scored the next four points to take the 23-17 lead. Simpson eventually won the first set 25-18.
In the second set, the Red Hawks took an early 10-5 lead, as the Firebirds committed numerous errors. St. Katherine fought hard to close the gap and tied the game 12-12 before Coach Thomas Kirst called a timeout. After exchanging points, the Red Hawks pulled ahead 22-20 before a St. Katherine timeout. Simpson won the second set 25-22.
In the third set, the Firebirds had an early 2-0 lead, but a kill from freshman Rachel Lowe ended their streak. Cavalli and Jessica Lombardi found and took advantage of the open spots on the floor, as each finished with eight kills. The Red Hawks won the final set 25-19.
The Red Hawks will host Oregon Institute of Technology on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. The Red Hawks and the Owls faced each other earlier this season, and the Owls came away with the 3-1 win.
