Simpson University Sports News

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s volleyball team hosted the Wolves from Walla Walla University on Tuesday, Sept.17. The Red Hawks defeated the Wolves in three straight sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-12).

The first set consisted of back-to-back blocks from freshman Rachel Lowe. With Simpson keeping a steady 13-8 lead, Wolves Head Coach Sara Todorovich called a timeout. The Red Hawks used the timeout to their advantage, as multiple kills from Audrey Green and assists from Kelly Tycksen led the Red Hawks’ offensive attack. Victoria Furze’s set-winning kill gave the Red Hawks the 25-16 victory.

In the second set, Lowe was the glue for the Red Hawks. With multiple kills and multiple blocks from Lowe, the Red Hawks and Wolves remained tied at 10-10. A kill from Green gave Simpson the lead, but the Wolves fought back and gained a 11-14 lead before Coach Thomas Kirst called a timeout. Sophomore Katelynne Cavalli had some clutch kills at the end of the second set to stop the Wolves’ run. An ace from Jamie Pickett secured a second set 25-18 win for the Red Hawks.

The third and final set was a battle. Tying a total of five times, the Red Hawks pushed through to win 25-21. Kills from Green and freshmen Aimee Belleville contributed to Simpson’s win.

Green and Jessica Lombardi led both teams in kills with 15 each, and Tycksen led both teams with 42 assists.

The Red Hawks will prepare for their first conference game Wednesday, Sept. 18, as they host La Sierra University at 7:30 p.m.
