Simpson loses in final seconds to Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Red Hawks women's basketball team was handed a tough loss on Thursday, Jan. 3, when they lost 76-73 to the Cougars from Cal State San Marcos.

In this game, the Cougars led from wire to wire. They were able to stretch out a 17-point lead at two different times in the first half. The Red Hawks fought back and cut the lead to five points at the break (40-35).

The second half was much closer, and the Red Hawk tied the game up at 66 with 5:23 to play. The Cougars had an answer for everything that the Red Hawks threw at them. With the Cougars leading 74-72, Nichole Jones went to the free-throw line with a chance to tie the game with four seconds remaining. However, she was only able to make one of her two attempts. The Cougars’ Jessica Harris was fouled immediately, and she made her free throws to secure the 76-73 win.

The Cougars were led by Heather Thompson, who had a double-double with 24 points and 16 rebounds. She went 12-of-16 from the field.

Ariassa Wilson led the Red Hawks with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Jones added 21 points and six steals, and Tiffany Aaserude and Bianca Padilla both scored 10 points.
