Women’s Basketball Notes: Lady Red Hawks open up Cal Pac play

THIS WEEK: The Simpson University women's basketball team 4-13, 0-0 Cal Pac) will open Cal Pac Conference play against Menlo College (13-3, 0-0 Cal Pac) on Thursday, Jan. 10, and UC Merced (1-12, 0-0 Cal Pac) on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Heritage Student Life Center.
LAST WEEK: Simpson traveled to Southern California for a four-game road trip. The Red Hawks came up short in all four games, losing to San Diego Christian (65-52), Cal State San Marcos (76-73), No. 4 Westmont (77-41), and No.13 The Master’s College (96-62).

ABOUT MENLO: Menlo enters conference play after dropping out of the NAIA II top 25 for the first time in two weeks. The Oaks were ranked No. 24 in the nation heading into Christmas break. The Oaks are currently ranked first in the Cal Pac and ninth in the nation with points scored per game (78.6). The Oaks have one of the best defensive rebounding teams in the nation; they are ranked second in the NAIA (31). Sophomore guard Jolise Limcaco leads the team in scoring with 17.8 points per game. Sophomore Laurel Donnenwirth leads the team in rebounds with 9.5 per game. Menlo went 1-1 last week, losing to La Sierra 76-72 and then defeating UC Santa Cruz 73-67.
ABOUT UC MERCED: UC Merced enters their first season as an NAIA and Cal Pac member. The Bobcats earned their first and only win against former Cal Pac power and now NCAA II member Holy Names. Freshmen guard Shelby Howard leads the Bobcats in scoring with 15.8 points per game, and freshmen forward Karina Polman leads the team in rebounding with 6.5 rebounds per game.
THE NUMBERS: Junior Nichole Jones is ranked first in total steals (69) in the NAIA. She is also ranked third in steals per game (3.8). Junior Tiffany Aaserude is ranked 24th in the NAIA in 3-pointers made (40). Simpson as a team is ranked 12th in total steals (218) and 15th in steals per game (12). Also the Lady Red Hawks are ranked 29th in free throw percentage (70) in the NAIA. Jones leads the team in scoring (15.3ppg) and steals (3.83). Senior Ariassa Wilson leads the team in rebounds (7.35) and assists (2.71).
LOOKING AHEAD: Next week, the Lady Red Hawks face conference rival William Jessup on Thursday, Jan. 17 in Rocklin, Calif., and will play a non-conference game against La Sierra on Sunday, Jan. 20 at the Heritage Student Life Center.
