Women’s Basketball Notes: Lady Red Hawks hit the road for Cal Pac play

THIS WEEK: The Simpson University women's basketball team ((6-16, 1-2 Cal Pac) will hit the road this week to play Cal Pac opponents Pacific Union College (2-12, Cal Pac 0-4) on Thursday, Jan. 24 and CSU Maritime (3-16, Cal Pac 1-1) on Saturday, Jan. 26.
LAST WEEK: Simpson went 1-1 last week, losing to William Jessup 75-67 and defeating La Sierra 65-62. Nichole Jones and Sarah Quantz led the Red Hawks in scoring in the loss to William Jessup with 15 points each. Jones led the Red Hawks again in scoring with 17 points in win over La Sierra. Tiffany Aaserude contributed 11 points, and Madison Cox followed with 10 points and six rebounds.

ABOUT PACIFIC UNION: The Pioneers lost two games last week to No. 25 Menlo College (87-41) and La Sierra University (54-41). Guard Alejandra Gallardo leads Pacific Union in scoring (12.39) as well as in assists (1.49). Alexandra Santanello leads the team in rebounding (6.85), and Emily Assavapistkul leads the Pioneers in steals with 1.54. The Pioneers are ranked No. 45 in the nation in defensive rebounds (26.9). Gallardo ranks No. 39 in the nation in defensive rebounds (5.53).
ABOUT CSU MARITIME: CSU Maritime defeated UC Merced last week (58-49). Javier Brantley led the Keelhaulers with 15 points, and Juila Tani added 10 points. Brantley leads the team in scoring (13.75), rebounds (5.3), and steals (2.25). Shante Sands leads the team in assists (2.05), and Tatjana Pitts leads the team in blocks (.41). The Keelhaulers as a team are ranked No. 36 in NAIA in total 3-pointers made (119) and No. 49 in 3-pointers made per game (5.4). Brantley is ranked No. 24 in the nation in 3-pointers mad per game (2.4), No. 26 in 3-pointers made (48) and No. 30 in three-point percentage (39 percent).
THE NUMBERS: Jones is ranked No. 2 in total steals (79) in the NAIA. She is also ranked No. 3 in steals per game (3.59), No. 30 in total scoring (335), and No. 31 in field goal percentage (48 percent). Aaserude is ranked No. 32 in 3-pointers made (46) in the NAIA. Simpson as a team is ranked No. 9 in total steals (262) and No. 15 in steals per game (11.9). Jones leads the team in scoring (15.23ppg) and steals (3.59). Senior Ariassa Wilson leads the team in rebounds (7.63) and assists (2.63). The Red Hawks are currently ranked No. 28 in the NCCAA I national polls.
LOOKING AHEAD: Next week, the Lady Red Hawks host conference rival William Jessup on Saturday, Feb. 2. Tip off set for 5:30 p.m.
