REDDING, Calif. - The Red Hawk women’s golf team hosted the Simpson University Invitational on April 1-2 at Tierra Oaks Golf Course in Redding, Calif. The Mariners from Marymount College also competed in the tournament.
Due to the absence of two Simpson golfers, the Red Hawks had to forfeit the team win and compete individually. Senior Brionna Goulart and freshmen Ashley Espericueta and Kimmy Berg competed for the Red Hawks. Monica Fisher, Shae Lillie, Shaylene Smith, and Mayra Guttierrez competed for the Mariners.
The first day of the tournament had wet weather, but the golfers felt prepared and adjusted their game accordingly.
“We are somewhat use to playing in the rain,” said Goulart, who is the team captain. “We play a lot of tournaments in Oregon, but we still had to stay dry and not let it affect us mentally.”
Although the Red Hawks had to forfeit the team win, Berg won the individual portion of the tournament with a score of 180. Esperciuta finished third with a score of 195, and Goulart finished fourth with a score of 198.
“It’s always an advantage playing on your home course,” said Goulart. “We’re so comfortable there and have knowledge about the course that visiting players don’t have, so that contributed to us placing so high. We’re just playing great right now, so it wasn’t a surprise at all.”
