Lady Red Hawks lose conference opener to Soka
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women's soccer team took to the field on Sunday, Aug. 25, for their first game of the season against California Pacific Conference opponent Soka University. It was a disappointing start to the season, as the Red Hawks lost the game 5-0.
The Red Hawks' day started off on the wrong foot, when the Lions were awarded a penalty in the ninth minute and Red Hawk senior Adrianna Hedrick received a yellow card. Soka defender Amy Fuller converted the penalty to make the score 1-0. Just three minutes later, the Lions were on the offensive again. The Red Hawk defense failed to clear the ball safely off of a corner kick, and Soka’s Cassandra Calhoun pounced to score the Lions second goal of the game. Things then went from bad to worse in the 25th minute, when on a Lions break Soka winger Zoe Witt crossed a ball into the danger area and Red Hawk defender Brittany Garrison turned the ball into her own net to make it 3-0. The Red Hawks then settled down and played well for the remainder of the first half, but they were unable to score.
For the majority of the second half, both teams played an evenly matched game. The Lions had a breakthrough in the 67th minute, when Denim Belville scored Soka’s fourth goal of the game. Soka midfielder Aubree West finished off the Lion’s scoring in the 78th minute, when she scored an outstanding free kick to give her team the it 5-0 victory.
The Red Hawks will now turn their focus to Wednesday, Aug. 28, when they will take on the Flames from Bethesda University of California at the Redding Soccer Park at 5 p.m.
