REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women's softball team played in their last home game of the year on Thursday, May 2, when they hosted the 2013 NCCAA West Regional Championship against the Lancers from Cal Baptist University from Riverside, Calif. It was a close, hard-fought game, but the Red Hawks secured the win 3-2 in nine innings in come-from-behind fashion. Cal Bapist was the 2012 NCCAA National Champion.

The Red Hawks sent senior Hayley Rodriguez to pitch against Lancers starter Jessica Avila. The Lancers took a 1-0 lead the first inning, when Sloan McHann came to the plate with runners on first and second. Marshean August the Lancers’ first run off McHann’s single. Rodriguez settled down and got the Red Hawks out of the inning without further damage.

In the third inning, the Lancers doubled their lead (2-0). McHann doubled to get the Lancers off to a good start in the inning. Tayler Castro pinch ran for the Lancers and scored when April Vasquez singled.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Simpson's Kara Wall led off the inning with a deep solo homer to get the Red Hawks on the board (1-0). Then in the same inning, Nicole Hutchins came up to bat with runners on base. She singled down the right field line to score Cherie DeJesus to tie the game up at 2-2.

The Lancers brought in Belinda Renne during the inning in relief. She and Rodriguez were both locked in from the fifth inning through the eighth, only allowing two hits each over that span of the game. The Red Hawks had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the eighth, when Marisa Marmolejo tried and score on a caught fly ball, but she was thrown out by a great throw from Lancer left fielder Jordan Mowatt.

Rodriguez sat the Lancers down in order in the top of the ninth, setting up another opportunity for the Red Hawks to win in the bottom half of the frame. Morgan Davis led off the inning by reaching base on an error. Noel Montes followed that up with a single. Davis moved over to third base on a fielder’s choice, brining Wall back to the plate. Renne intentionally walked Wall to load the bases, bringing up DeJesus. DeJesus got the ball in play deep enough to bring in Davis to seal the win 3-2 in walk-off fashion.

Rodriguez got the win for the Red Hawks. She went the full nine innings, allowing two runs on nine hits and striking out four. Renne was hit with the loss, allowing one run on four hits in five innings of work.

DeJesus finished the game 1-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Wall was 1-for-3 with a RBI, a run scored and two walks. Hutchins went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Montes also contributed big to the win by going 3-for-5.
