Red Hawks sweep doubleheader against Menlo

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women's softball team hosted a doubleheader against the Oaks from Menlo College on Sunday, April 14. The Red Hawks won both games and moved more securely into first place in the California Pacific Conference.
In game one, the Oaks quickly set the tone of the game, as left fielder Mary Hall singled in the first inning. With teammate Kayla Cisneroz grounding to short, Hall scored to give the Oaks a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Red Hawk senior Morgan Davis answered back in the bottom of the inning, when she hit a home run over the center field fence on a 3-1 count to tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the third, Menlo scored one run to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Red Hawks scored four runs. Right fielder Ryan Norton hit a two-run home run over the right field fence on a 1-1 count to score herself and Davis. Later in the inning, left fielder Aleisha Brown’s single brought home second baseman Cherie DeJesus and pinch runner Taylor Hill. The Red Hawks led 5-2 going into the fourth inning.
In the fourth, the Red Hawks took an 8-2 lead, when Davis hit another home run. Norton and DeJesus scored, and the Oaks had no answer for the three runs. Freshmen Carlye Avey pitched a complete game for the Red Hawks, ending with four strikeouts and the win.
In the second game, freshman Emily Stokes pitched for the Red Hawks, and she ended the game with nine strikeouts and the win. The only run came from freshman Marisa Marmolejo in the bottom of the fourth inning off of a Hill RBI. The Red Hawks won 1-0.
The Red Hawks will look for two more victories as they host another doubleheader against Menlo College Monday, April 15, at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
