REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women's softball team traveled to Irvine, Calif., to participate in NAIA Unaffiliated Grouping No. 1 Softball Tournament on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27. They finished second in the tournament after losing to No. 1 and tournament host Concordia University-Irvine on Saturday, April 27.
Simpson only played two teams in the tournament: Biola University and Concordia-Irvine. Simpson won both games against Biola and lost both games to Concordia-Irvine.
The Red Hawks first win over Biola was in the form of a 5-0 shutout on Friday, April 26. Senior Hayley Rodriguez pitched a complete game, allowing just three runs and no hits. Senior Morgan Davis scored two runs to lead the Red Hawks’ offense. Chelsea Dunn, Noel Montes, and Chasteena Determan also scored runs. Dunn had two RBIs, and Aleisha Brown, Nichole Hutchins, and Cherie DeJesus each had one RBI.
With the win over Biola, Simpson advanced to the winner’s bracket and faced Concordia-Irvine. The Eagles dominated the game and won 8-0 in six innings. Red Hawk freshman was hit with the loss. She gave up eight runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Simpson faced an elimination game Saturday, April 27. They once again faced Biola, who had defeated William Jessup University on Friday to avoid elimination. The Red Hawks once again shut out the Biola, this time winning 1-0. Brown scored the game-winning and only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning off a Montes single to left field. Freshman Carlye Avey pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and no runs and striking out six batters.
Simpson advanced to the championship game on Saturday afternoon. They lost 3-0. Concordia-Irvine scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning. Rodriguez got the loss. She gave up four hits and three runs. Concordia's Katie Cotta threw her ninth no-hitter of the season. Concordia-Irvine advanced to the 33rd Annual NAIA National Tournament with their win over Simpson.
