Simpson ranked No. 3 in NCCAA national tourney

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women's softball team is participating in the NCCAA National Championship Tournament on May 9-11 in Botetourt, Va. The Red Hawks are ranked No. 3 in the tournament. Simpson's first game in the tournament is against No. 6 Union University on Thursday, May 9 at 2:30 p.m.
The Red Hawks have been ranked in the NCCAA Top 10 all season and reached as high as No. 5. They are led by senior pitcher Hayley Rodriguez, who has an era of 2.69, and junior Chelsea Dunn, who has recorded 39 RBIs and five home runs. This is Simpson's third appearance in four years. In 2011, Simpson finished second losing to North Greenville, and in 2010 the Red Hawks finished fourth.
Simpson finished the year with a 35-26 record and won their second straight California Pacific Conference title. The Red Hawks finished second in the NAIA West Unaffiliated Group Tournament Championship to No.1 Concordia-Irvine. Simpson advanced to the national tournament by defeating defending NCCAA national champion California Baptist 3-2 in extra innings to win the NCCAA West Region Championship on Thursday, May 2.
Other teams competing in the tournament include No. 1 Shorter University, No. 2 Central Baptist College, No. 4 Judson University, No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan University, No. 6 Union University, No. 7 Geneva College, No. 8 Campbellsville University, No. 9 Oklahoma Wesleyan University, and No. 10 Trevecca Nazarene University.
