REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women's softball team is participating in two regional tournaments over the next week. This weekend, they are playing in the NAIA West Regional Tournament hosted by Concordia-University Irvine in Irvine, Calif. The Lady Red Hawks host the NCCAA Regional Tournament on Thursday, May 2 at 12 p.m.


NCCAA Regional Qualifier Preview: Simpson vs. Cal Baptist - Thursday, May 2

The Simpson University women's softball team is hosting the NCCAA Regional Qualifying Tournament on Thursday, May 2 at noon. The Red Hawks are taking on California Baptist University from Riverside, Calif.

The Red Hawks ended the regular season with a record of 32-24 and a conference record of 10-6. They finished their conference season as co-champions of the California Pacific Conference with William Jessup University. On Saturday, April 26, Simpson finished second in the NAIA West Regional Tournament. They lost in the championship game to NAIA No. 1 Concordia University-Irvine.

The Lancers finished the regular season with a 31-17 overall record and an 18-14 conference record. They are a member of the Pac West Conference. Cal Baptist ended their season a roll, having won 12 out of their 13 games in April. They secured wins over Azusa Pacific University, Dominican University, Northwest Nazarene University, UC San Diego, San Francisco State, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Cal State East Bay.

Simpson loses NAIA West Regional Tournament to Concordia-Irvine

The Simpson University women's softball team took on No. 1 Concordia University-Irvine in the championship game of the NAIA West Regional tournament on Saturday, April 27. The Red Hawks lost 3-0.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Concordia-Irvine scored all three of their runs. Emily Craig and Annett Merjano hit back-to-back solo home runs to center field to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Bryana Simpson scored the final run of the inning and of the game off a Caitrin Debaun single up the middle. With this win, the Eagles advance to the NAIA National Tournament.

Red Hawk senior Hayley Rodriguez got the loss. She gave up four hits and three runs. Concordia's Katie Cotta threw her ninth no-hitter of the season.

Up next for the Red Hawks is hosting the NCCAA Qualifying Tournament on Thursday, May 2, at 12 p.m.

Simpson shuts out Biola for second time in NAIA tourney

The Simpson University women's softball team played No. 6 Biola University for the second time this weekend on Saturday, April 27, in the NAIA West Regional Tournament. The Lady Red Hawks defeated Biola 1-0. Simpson’s first win against Biola in tournament play was on Friday, April 27, when the Red Hawks shut the Eagles out 5-0.

Sophomore Aleisha Brown scored the game-winning and only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning off a Noel Montes single to left field. Freshman Carlye Avey pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and no runs and striking out six batters.

Simpson advances to the championship game against No. 1 Concordia University-Irvine. The Red Hawks lost to the Eagles 8-0 in tournament play on Friday, April 27. Simpson will have to defeat Concordia-Irvine twice today to win the NAIA West Regional Tournament. If they lose the first game, the Eagles will win and advance to the NAIA National Tournament.

Simpson held scoreless by Concordia-Irvine

The Simpson University women's softball team took on No. 1 Concordia University in the NAIA West Regional Tournament on Friday, April 26. The Eagles defeated Simpson 8-0 in six innings.

Concordia-Irvine took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with Jenna Joregenson hit a two-run home run. The Eagles took 4-0 lead in the bottom of second by scoring two unearned runs. They added a run in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead, when Hannah Howell hit a solo home run. The Eagles capped their scoring spree with a three-run sixth inning. Caitrin Debaun, Rachel Prentice, and Chanele Dresser each scored a run. Red Hawk freshman Emily Stokes was hit with the loss. She gave up eight runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Simpson advances to an elimination game at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 27. If they win the elimination game, they will face Concordia-Irvine in a potential championship game at 2 p.m.

No. 2 Simpson @ No. 1 Concordia-Irvine Preview - Friday, April 26

The No. 2 Simpson University women's softball team will take on No. 1 Concordia University-Irvine in the NAIA West Regional Tournament at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, April 26. The Red Hawks advanced to this game with a 5-0 shutout over No. 6 Biola University earlier on Friday.

Today’s match-up is the third meeting between Simpson and Concordia-Irvine this season. They played a doubleheader on Saturday, March 30, in Irvine, Calif. In the first game between these two teams, Simpson won 2-1 in extra innings. The game featured all three runs being scored in the eighth inning and a pitching duel between Red Hawk senior Hayley Rodriguez and Concordia’s Katie Cotta. In game two of the doubleheader, the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Simpson tied the game in the top of the third, but Concordia regained the lead in the bottom of the inning (3-2). The Eagles scored six more runs over the course the game and claimed the 9-2 victory over Simpson.

The winner of Friday’s game will advance to the championship game at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. The loser will play at 11:30 on Saturday.

No. 2 Simpson shuts out No. 6 Biola in NAIA West Tournament

The Simpson University women's softball team played Biola University in the NAIA West Regional Tournament on Friday, April 26. The No. 2 Red Hawks shut out the Eagles 5-0.

Simpson took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Morgan Davis and freshman Noel Montes both scored on junior Chelsea Dunn’s double to right center field. Junior Cherie DeJesus reached home when sophomore Alesiha Brown was walked by Biola’s pitcher. In the third inning, freshman pinch runner Chastenna Determan increased Simpson’s lead to 4-0, when she scored on senior Nicole Hutchin’s double to center field. Davis scored her second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth off a DeJesus groundout to Biola’s shortstop. Senior Hayley Rodriguez pitched a complete game, allowing just three hits and no runs.

Simpson will play No. 1 and tournament host Concordia University-Irvine at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, April 26.

No. 2 Simpson vs. No. 6 Biola Preview - Friday, April 26

Simpson is ranked No. 2 in the NAIA West Regional Tournament. Their first game of the tournament is against No. 6 Biola University at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, April 26. Biola advanced to the round two game against Simpson by defeating No. 3 Vanguard University on Thursday, April 25.

This is the third meeting this season between Simpson and Biola. They played a doubleheader in La Mirada, Calif., on Thursday, March 28 and split the series. Biola won game one 3-0, and Simpson won game two 9-0. The winner of the tournament game will play at 4:15 p.m on Friday. The loser will play at 2 p.m. on Friday.
