Simpson loses doubleheader to Cougars

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women's softball team hosted NAIA No. 3 Cal State San Marcos on Sunday, April 21. This was the final home doubleheader for seniors Morgan Davis, Haley Rodriguez, Nicole Hutchins, Cali Avey, and Bryanna Esquivel.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Red Hawks took an early lead, when Davis scored off of a sacrifice fly in the first inning. CSUSM responded scored two runs in the third on a double from sophomore Olivia Lucatuorto to take a 2-1 lead. In the seventh, the Cougars scored two more runs, and Simpson could not answer back. CSUSM won the first game 4-1.
In game two, the Cougars scored seven runs in the first inning off Red Hawk pitcher Katie Bell. After switching pitchers to Emily Stokes in the second inning, the Cougars scored two more runs to take a 9-0 lead. The Red Hawks brought the score to 91- in the bottom second inning, when first baseman Jodie Richards doubled to get on base and then scored off left fielder Aleisha Brown’s double into left-center field. The score stayed 9-1 for the remainder of the game, as neither team could score.
Simpson ended their season with a 32-24 overall record and will prepare for the NAIA regional playoffs hosted by Concordia University-Irvine on April 25-27.
