REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University men's baseball team opened the 2014 season with a 9-1 home loss to The Master’s College Mustang on Friday, Jan. 17.

In the first two innings, the Mustangs scored a total of six runs. The Red Hawks, struggling to get on base, picked up the slack on defense with help from junior Daniel Mills and didn’t allow the Mustangs any runs until the fifth inning. The Mustangs scored three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the 9-0 lead. The Red Hawks scored their only run of the game in the eighth inning, when freshman pinch runner Aaron Curfman scored off Mills’ single to right field. Master’s finished the game with the 9-1 win.

Sophomore Garret Greenhaw started the night pitching for the Red Hawks and finished the game with six earned runs and one strikeout. Ryan Lombardi, a transfer from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, pitched the rest of the night in a position he hasn’t played since high school. Lombardi finished the night with no earned runs and two strikeouts.

“I was just doing my job,” Lombardi said. “Coach needed me to fill in and I wanted to shut Master’s down to allow my teammates the best opportunity to make a comeback. Pitching allowed me the ability to control their game and get us back on the offense.”

When asked how they approached the game knowing that the Mustangs were ranked No. 12, right fielder Harold Adams said, “We went into the game with an aggressive approach and wanted to catch them off guard on our home field. We came in knowing that we were the underdogs and that’s how we wanted it to be.”

Mills led the Red Hawks with one RBI and five putouts. First basemen Elden Whisman also had five putouts, and third basemen Cody Asdorian had three assists.

The Red Hawks will face The Master’s College in a doubleheader on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
