Red Hawks Win on the Road Against Corban

SALEM, Ore. - The Simpson University men’s basketball team took on the Corban University Warriors on Nov. 21. The Red Hawks defeated the Warriors 75-64.
Shaquille Jones scored first the Red Hawks, and Simpson took the lead on a Jonnie Washburn jumper. Senior Gabriel Valencia added two points in the paint to put the Red Hawks up by six, and Washburn’s back-to-back 3’s gave Simpson a 12-point lead. The Warriors went on a run and cut the lead to five. Simpson took the momentum back before halftime and went up 13 on Dalton Thacker’s 3, but the Warriors hit a buzzer beater and cute Simpson’s lead to 41-31 at the half.
The Red Hawks controlled most of the second half and had the lead the entire half. Thacker scored first for the Red Hawks, and Jones hit a 3. With eight minutes to go, Ian Corella hit a jumper to make the score 58-42, giving the Red Hawks their largest lead of the game. The Warriors started to chip away at the lead and got within five, until Washburn hit a big 3 to put Simpson up eight with two minutes to go. The Warriors kept fighting, but the Red Hawks continued to make their free throws. With 20 seconds left, freshman Josh Delamarter got a dunk to end the game and give Simpson the 75-64 victory.
Thacker led the Red Hawks with 17 points. Washburn went 4-for-7 from behind the arc and finished the game with 16 points. Anthony Williams was the leading rebounder with seven, and Jones led the team with six assists.
The Red Hawks will play Lewis and Clark State on Nov. 22 at Corban University at 4 p.m.
