Simpson Loses Close Game to Mountaineers

LA GRANDE, Ore. - The Simpson University men’s basketball team had a re-match against Eastern Oregon University on Oct. 25. The Mountaineers defeated the Red Hawks 83-77.

Eastern Oregon started the game by taking the lead, but Simpson stayed close. The Red Hawks tied the game with 12:40 left, but the Mountaineers took a 13-point lead with about five minutes left in the first half. Simpson continued to chip away at the lead and went into halftime down only one (44-43). The second half was neck-and-neck until the Mountaineers began to pull away. Eastern Oregon had a 10-point lead with five minutes left, but that did not stop Simpson from trying to mount a comeback. The Red Hawks ran out of time and fell 83-77 to the Mountaineers 83-77.

Simpson’s leading scorer was Shaquille Jones, who had 21 points. Rufus Humphrey led the Red Hawks with eight rebounds, and Anthony Williams had five steals and three assists.

The Red Hawks will compete in the Frank Dye Classic hosted by California State University-Maritime on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. They will take on Warner Pacific College at 5:30 on Oct. 31.
