Simpson Player of the Week: Gabriel Valencia
Simpson University Sports News
Gabriel Valencia has proven to be a spark off the bench for the Simpson University men’s basketball team. Entering his first year playing for the Red Hawks, Valencia has used his length and his size to be a powerhouse down low and create open looks for his teammates.
Valencia is a transfer from Tohono O'odham College and played two years of varsity basketball at Douglas High School. He played club basketball for the Tucson Heat, Seleccion Sonora (MEX), and Seleccion Agua Prieta (MEX). Valencia is averaging 4.2 points per game and has nine blocks in the season.
This past week, Valencia played a big role in helping the Red Hawks earn a third conference win against the UC Merced Bobcats on Saturday, Jan. 11. Valencia finished with 10 points, one assist, and one steal. He also went 6-for-8 at the free throw line.
“Basketball has given me an opportunity to further my education, see different places of the country and also keeps me out of trouble,” he said.
