Simpson Player of the Week: Jonnie Washburn

Simpson University Sports News

01.20.2014

Jonnie Washburn has proven to be a key player for the Simpson University men’s basketball team. A transfer from Seattle Pacific University and entering his second season playing with the Red Hawks, Washburn has been a leader on and off the court with his wisdom and also with his tenacious defense and ability to shoot the ball.

Washburn was a four-year starter on Cascade Christian's basketball team, located in Puyallup, Wash. His athletic honors include being a three-time team captain and MVP, three-time first team all-league selection, an all-state selection, and a state champion. He earned high honors all four years of high school. Washburn currently averages 8.35 points per game and 2.85 rebounds per game.

This past week Washburn hit the buzzer-beater 3-pointer that sent the Red Hawks into overtime against La Sierra University, where they came out victorious 87-84. Washburn finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and one steal to help Simpson secure a 4-0 conference record.

“I’m generally a pretty laid back person so people don’t know how competitive I am,” said Washburn. “Because basketball is so intensely competitive, it gives me a feeling nothing else does. I’m just thankful God has given me such an awesome opportunity to do something I love for so long!”
