Simpson remains undefeated in conference play with dramatic overtime win
Simpson University Sports News
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Everyone has a role on a team, and bench players are just as important as starters. This statement rang true for sophomore Amon Schenk, who hit the game-winning 3-pointer in overtime against California Pacific Conference opponent La Sierra University on Thursday, Jan. 16. The Red Hawks won 87-84 and advanced to 4-0 in conference play.
In the first half, the Red Hawks found themselves down by as many as seven points. With 52 seconds left in the half, guard Shaquille Jones tied the game 52-52 with two free throws. With two more free throws from Dalton Thacker and a 3-pointer from Jonnie Washburn, the Red Hawks went into halftime ahead 37-32.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles fought back and took a 75-67 lead with 2:49 left to play. Another 3-pointer from Washburn put Simpson within five points (75-70) with 2:06 left. A field goal from Schenk and a free throw from Thacker made it a one possession game (76-73) with 22 seconds left to play. La Sierra called a timeout, giving the Red Hawks time to draw up one last play. Coming out of the timeout, Thacker created space and kicked it out to Washburn, who hit a clutch 3-pointer two feet behind the arc, to tie the game 76-76 with five seconds left to play, sending the game into overtime.
In overtime play, both teams exchanged baskets until the last minute of the game. Schenk hit a field goal to tie the game at 84-84 with 40 seconds left. With a missed shot from La Sierra, the Red Hawks pushed the ball up the court. With Schenk at the top of arc, two screens immediately came to both sides. With 1.7 seconds left, Schenk turned down both screens and hit the 3-pointer that would give the Red Hawks the 87-84 victory.
Simpson will prepare for a non-conference game against CSU San Marcos on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
