Simpson University Sports News

ATHERTON, Calif. - Simpson University men’s basketball team played in the California Pacific Conference Championship game against No. 1 California State University of Maritime at 8 p.m. on Monday, March 3. The Red Hawks’ season ended with a 96-82 loss.

In the first half, the Red Hawks started out strong with transition baskets from Shaquille Jones and offensive drives from Dalton Thacker. With the largest lead in double digits, numerous foul calls hurt Simpson by getting players into foul trouble and getting Maritime back into the game through free throws. The Red Hawks went into halftime ahead 48-43.

In the second half, Simpson led until the 13-minute mark, when Maritime took a 61-60. The teams exchanged baskets to keep the game close, but the Red Hawks then found themselves in foul trouble again. The Maritime Keelhaulers eventually won 96-82.

The Red Hawks were led offensively by Ian Corella, Amon Schenk, and Anthony Williams, who each had 15 points. Thacker finished with 11 points and seven assists, and Jones finished with 10 points.

Jonnie Washburn and Thacker each received second team all-conference honors, and Williams received first team all-conference honors. Simpson will say farewell to senior Nic Thacker.
