Red Hawks win nail biter

ATHERTON, Calif. - Simpson University men’s basketball team traveled to Atherton, Calif., to compete against Menlo College on Saturday, Feb. 1at 7:30 p.m. The Red Hawks won the closely contested game 79-78 win, and advanced to 7-1 in the California Pacific Conference.
The Red Hawks started the half strong, and big baskets from Anthony Williams and Dalton Thacker gave Simpson a six-point lead. With two minutes left in the half, Menlo closed the gap and tied the game for the first time at 35-35. Using the momentum, the Oaks went into halftime ahead 42-38.
In the second half, Simpson worked to gain the lead again, tying the game six. With 1:19 left in the game, the Red Hawks were down 78-75. A crucial basket from Gabriel Valencia brought Simpson within with one with 1:09 left to play. After a turnover from the Oaks, the Red Hawks gained possession of the ball with 24 seconds left to play. With a missed shot by Ian Corella and an offensive rebound from Williams, Simpson had another opportunity to win the game. Williams passed to Thacker, who missed a floater. Corella snagged the offensive rebound and scored to give the Red Hawks a 79-78 lead with six seconds left. Menlo failed to score, giving Simpson the win and advancing to 7-1 in conference.
The Red Hawks shot 52% from the field and had five players score in double-digits. Williams led Simpson with 21 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Corella scored 18 points; and Thacker finished with 13. Valencia had 12 points, and Shaquille Jones scored 11 points.
Simpson will prepare for their next conference game against William Jessup University on Friday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
