Red Hawks win conference home opener

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men’s basketball team hosted California Pacific Conference opponent Menlo College on Thursday, Jan. 9. The Red Hawks won 78-60 and improved their conference record to 2-0.

The Red Hawks started the first half of the game strong after a quick exchange of baskets from Menlo. With a 6-5 lead, the Red Hawks went on a run that increased their lead to 23-9. Through forced shots and unforced turnovers, the Oaks closed the gap to 33-31 with three minutes left to play in the half. But the Red Hawks then went on an 8-0 run to finish the half ahead 39-31.

In the second half, the Oaks tied at 47 with 12 minutes left to play, but with big plays from Shaquille Jones and Dalton Thacker the Red Hawks pulled away and finished the game with a 78-60 win.

The Red Hawks were led by Thacker’s 18 points, four steals, five rebounds, and five assists and Jones’ 13 points and two steals. Jonnie Washburn and Gabriel Valencia also scored in the double digits with 12 points and 11 points respectively.

Simpson will prepare for their next conference game held at home on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 8:30 p.m. against UC Merced.
