Red Hawks win big over UC Merced at home

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men’s basketball team (5-15 overall, 3-0 Cal Pac) hosted the UC Merced Bobcats on Saturday, Jan. 11 and won 85-55.
In the first half, the Red Hawks were up 11-6 with 16 minutes left when point guard Dalton Thacker came out with an injury. With 10 minutes left to play, starting shooting guard and back- up point guard Shaquille Jones also suffered an injury, leaving Simpson without a true point guard for a chunk of the first half. In the last 10 minutes of the half, junior Gabriel Valencia came up with big shots and crucial rebounds to give the Red Hawks the 40-23 lead at halftime.
In the second half, big minutes from Kyle Dawicki helped the Red Hawks earn the 85-55 victory. He scored a career-high 14 points and was 5-for-8 from the three-point line.
Simpson was led offensively by Jonnie Washburn’s 17 points and 5-for-7 shooting from the three-point line. Dawicki and Anthony Williams both finished with 14 points, and Jones and Valencia finished with 10 points.
The Red Hawks will travel to Riverside, Calif., to take on La Sierra University for their next conference match-up on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
