Red Hawks Fall to Sac State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Simpson University men’s basketball team took on the Sacramento State Hornets in Sacramento on Nov. 19. The Hornets defeated the Red Hawks 74-42.
The Hornets scored first, but Red Hawk senior Jonnie Washburn answered with a three assisted by senior Shaquille Jones to put Simpson up by one. Sac State then went on a run and took an 11-3 lead. The Red Hawks pulled within four off back-to-to-back baskets from senior Ian Corella. The Hornets scored nine straight, putting them up 20-7, until senior Dalton Thacker hit a jumper. The Hornets went on another run, until Corella made two baskets and junior Sam Siler made a lay-up to make the score 37-15. Thacker went 2-for-2 from the free throw line to make the score at the half 45-17 Hornets.
The Red Hawks came out of halftime fighting. Corella got a steal and then got fouled, taking him to the line. He made both free throws to put Simpson on the board first for the second half. Washburn hit a three assisted by Thacker, and then Sac State scored four points. Junior Rufus Humphrey came into the game and got two in the paint off an assist from Jones. Junior Marc Kirkland and Siler added back-to-back threes, but the Hornets went on another run until they sent Siler to the line where he went 2-for-3. Corella made a jumper and had an attempt at an extra point and was successful. Senior Anthony Williams and Jones scored three more free throws and Corella made a two. The game ended with the Hornets on top 74-42.
The Red Hawks hit the road to play in a tournament in Salem, Ore., taking on Corban University on Nov. 21.
