Red Hawks win conference opener

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Simpson University men’s basketball team started California Pacific Conference play with a 59-54 road win over rival William Jessup University on Saturday, Jan. 4.
After a 4-0 run by the Warriors, the Red Hawks quickly answered back with a 9-0 run and led 13-7 with 10 minutes left in the first half. Shaquille Jones and Marc Kirkland led Simpson offensively, and the Red Hawks went into halftime ahead 32-25.
In the second half, both teams continued to exchange baskets, not allowing each other to get ahead by more than five points. Tying for the sixth time (46-46) with five minutes left, Jones got two quick baskets to put the Red Hawks up by four. In the last 15 seconds, William Jessup came within one of the Red Hawks (55-54), but a big block from Anthony Williams plus three free throws from Dalton Thacker and one from Jones secured Simpson’s 59-54 victory.
The Red Hawks had four players in double digits. Jones led with 16 points, Williams had 14, Thacker had 11, and Kirkland finished with 10 points. Williams also had four assists and three steals, and Ian Corella had a game-high seven rebounds.
Simpson is preparing for its game against Menlo College on Thursday. Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
