Cal Pac Tournament Preview: No. 2 William Jessup vs. No. 3 Simpson

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University’s men’s basketball team is playing the William Jessup University Warriors on Saturday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m. in the first round of the California Pacific Conference Tournament held in Atherton, Calif. Simpson is the No. 3 seed, and William Jessup is the No. 2 seed. The winner of this game advances to the championship game on Monday, March 3 at 8 p.m. The winner of the championship game earns the right to play in the NAIA National Tournament in Branson, Mo. The other teams participating in the tournament are No. 1 CSU Maritime and No. 4 Menlo.

The format for the championship tournament is different this year. Only the top four teams qualified for a spot in the tournament, which will be held at a predetermined location. In the past, all teams qualified for the championship tournament, with the higher seeded teams hosting home games.

No. 2 William Jessup University

William Jessup lead the Cal Pac in scoring defense (69.1 points per game) and are tied for second with Simpson in defensive field goal percentage (42%). Corey Clement leads the Warriors’ offense. He ranks third in conference in points per game (18), first in field goal percentage (59.5%), third in rebounding (8.7), and first in free throw percentage (86.2%). Caleb Richey averages 10.9 points per game and a conference-best 4.7 assists per game. Anthony Edwards averages in 8.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, while Kelton Newman contributes 9.4 points per game.

No. 3 Simpson University

The Red Hawks have an explosive offense and defense. Simpson’s offense is ranked second in the Cal ac in points per game (74.3) and field goal percentage (44.2%). Dalton Thacker leads the Red Hawks with 13.4 points per game, while Anthony Williams and Ian Corella are averaging 12 points. Shaquille Jones contributes 9.8 a game, and Jonnie Washburn, Simpson’s leading three-point shooter, adds 9.7 points per game. Defensively, Simpson is led by Williams's 51 steals on the season. The Red Hawks know how to win close conference games, including three that came down to the last possession.
