KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - The Simpson University men’s golf team tied for fourth place with the College of Idaho at the annual Cascade Conference Opener held at the Running Y Ranch Golf Course in Klamath Falls, Ore., on Sept. 22-23.

Sophomore Nick Norgaard led the Red Hawks and tied for seventh place, posting a second round 69 with a three round total of 221. In his first outing with the Red Hawks, junior Barrett McLaughlin posted a three round 11-over-par, finishing tied for 14th . Playing in the number one spot for Simpson, sophomore Lucas Vaughn turned in an average of 77.6 for the three rounds and netted him a tie for 22nd place. Senior Marcus Mezzano posted a 2-under-par 34 on the first nine holes, finishing the two-day event tied for 29th with an average of 79.6. In the number five spot, junior Aaron Clare tied for 33rd with a three round total of 248.

Playing as an individual, junior Brett Boudreaux finished 39th in his first collegiate tournament and hit 12 out of 14 fairways during the first round.

“That’s quite an accomplishment considering he just started playing serious golf this past summer,” said assistant golf coach Joe Pantoja said. “Overall, the men played well. It’s amazing what one or two holes can do to your score.”

The Red Hawks will travel to Medford, Ore., on Sept. 27 in hopes of qualifying for the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association Conference Nationals in Panama City, Fla., in late October.

“I like our chances this year,” said head coach Mark Mezzano. “Our guys can go low and bring home a regional championship on the way to nationals.”
