Red Hawk Golfers Compete in Local Tournaments

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University women’s golfer Christina Phelps competed in the Rogue Valley Stroke Play golf tournament at Centennial Golf Club in Medford, Ore., on Aug. 23-24. Phelps’ two-day total of eight over par earned her a third-place finish.

“Shooting 77 and 75 with six birdies on Sunday is very respectable,” said Red Hawks’ golf coach Mark Mezzano. “It will no doubt get her ready for the Southern Oregon match play tournament Labor Day weekend.”

Phelps, a junior business major from Medford, has been working hard on her game all summer and is excited to get back to school and the fall golf season.

Incoming Red Hawk Barrett McLaughlin competed in the San Jose City Amateur golf tournament at the Santa Teresa Golf Club on Aug. 23-24. On the first day of the tournament, McLaughlin hit 14 greens in regulation and posted a 76, 11 strokes behind the tournament leader. He came back the second day and shot 72, finishing the two-day event tied for 29th out of 96 golfers. Earlier this month, he earned a second-place finish at the Merced County Amateur at the Merced Country Club.

McLaughlin will be wearing a Red Hawk jersey for the first time this fall, and we are excited to have him join our team,” Mezzano said.

McLaughlin is a junior business major from Sonora, Calif. He is a transfer student from Sierra College.
