Red Hawks compete in NAIA West Regional Qualifier

ATHERTON, Calif. - The Simpson University’s men’s wrestling team competed in the NAIA West National Qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Red Hawks faced wrestlers from Southern Oregon University, Great Falls University, Montana State Northern University, Menlo College, and Embry-Riddle University.
Simpson University junior Ty Young competed in the 125 pound weight class. He received two byes and earned two losses and a win before competing for fifth place. He lost the match and finished in sixth place and earned six team points.
Freshman Mason Sauseda also competed in the 125 pound weight class. He received two byes, a loss, and a win to earn fourth place and 10 team points. Junior A. J. Valles earned two wins before losing in the 133 pound championship match to earn second place and 12 team points.
Anthony Vega finished in fourth place in the 141 weight class and earned 10 team points. Marco Fratantoni placed sixth in the 149 pound weight class, scoring four team points. Richard Ortiz placed fourth in the 157 pound weight class, scoring 8.5 team points. Brady Beamon lost in the championship match for the 174 pound weight class, finishing in second place and earning 13 team points.
Marcus Zachary finished in fifth place in the 184 pound weight class, scoring eight team points. Christian White finished fifth in the 197 pound weight class, scoring seven team points. Austin Lobsinger lost in the heavyweight championship match, finishing second and earning 14 team points.
The Red Hawks finished in fifth place as a team with 92.5 total points. Southern Oregon finished first with 147 points; Great Falls finished second with 127.5 points; Montana Northern finished third with 109.5 points; Menlo College finished fourth with 93 points; and Embry-Riddle finished last with 91.5 points.
