Simpson University Sports News

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University’s men’s wrestling team hosted its first tournament on Nov. 22. Competition was outstanding, as wrestlers from four collegiate levels (NCAA DI, DII, NAIA, and JC) squared off in the Shasta High School gym.

NAIA No. 2 ranked power Southern Oregon won the tournament, with four champions and 196 points. The University of Great Falls finished second with 164.5 points; San Francisco State finished third with 133 points; Menlo finished fourth with 81.5 points; Pacific Warner finished fifth with 75.5 points; Southwestern Oregon finished sixth with 56 points; Simpson finished seventh with 47 points; Sacramento Community College finished eighth with 38 points; Lassen Community College finished ninth with 25.5 points; and Shasta College finished last with seven points.

Simpson had four tournament place-winners. Austin Lobsinger, a two-time NAIA All-American, placed first in the 285-pound weight class, but since he decided to redshirt, his victory was not add to Simpson’s score.

Freshman Fabian Aguilera finished in third at 133 pounds; sophomore Blaine Lindahl finished fifth at 149 points; and freshman Erik Medina placed fifth at 197 pounds. Aguilera went 4-1 for the day and finished with a 4-1 decision over Josh Crager of Pacific Warner in the consolation championship match. Lindahl and Medina both finished 3-2.

In the 174-pound weight class, Red Hawk wrestlers Matt Tsarnas and Marcus Zachary battled well but came up short of placing. Tsarnas was 3-2 and Zachary was 2-2 in a weight class that was won by three-time national champion Brock Gutches of Southern Oregon.

Missing from the Simpson University line-up were national qualifier Mason Sauseda (injured knee), two-time All American A.J. Valles (infection), and two-time All American Brady Beamon (injured hip).
