Golden Eagles Stun Red Hawks

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s volleyball team hosted the La Sierra University Golden Eagles on Friday, Oct. 3, in the Heritage Student Life Center. The Red Hawks lost in four sets (25-13, 18-25, 18-25, 17-25).
In the first set, senior Jamie Pickett came out strong, serving five times in a row causing La Sierra to call a timeout. Sophomore Aimee Belleville made her presence known with a big kill followed with a block to put the Red Hawks up 11-4. The SU front row stepped up with key digs from junior Jazmin Wallace, and consecutive kills from sophomore Kelsey Reibsamen, Pickett, freshman Ashley Cervantes and senior Jessica Lombardi put the Lady Red Hawks up 18-9. Cervantes saw a hole in the Golden Eagles’ defense and pushed the score to 21-11. Pickett soon followed with another key kill to put the Red Hawks at game point (24-13). The game ended on a Lombardi kill, and Simpson won the first set 25-13.
In the second set, the Lady Red Hawks took a 1-0 lead off a block from freshman Stevielee Jansen and Pickett. Jansen then had a solo block and a big kill to put Simpson up 4-1. A kill from senior Victoria Furze put the Red Hawks up 6-4. Wallace came up with a dig to set up Cervantes and give SU an 8-7 lead. The Golden Eagles started to play very scrappy and took a 12-11 lead. Junior Chelsea White used the Golden Eagle front row to get a kill, and Cervantes and Belleville got a big block to tie the set at 16. That was the last time the Red Hawks were close because the Golden Eagles won set two 25-18 and tied the match at one each.
Set three started off with both teams fighting hard and playing scrappy from the back row. The game was neck-and-neck until Pickett had a kill to put Simpson up 11-10. Then the teams had a long rally, which ended in La Sierra’s favor. Furze had a big kill to tie the game back up, and Lombardi had another kill. The lead continued to go back-and-fourth, until the Golden Eagles had a good rally which ended with a powerful kill and caused SU to call a timeout at 13-17. Cervantes came out of the timeout with a single block, but it was not enough and Coach Kirst called another timeout with La Sierra leading 23-17. Lombardi had another big block to put the score at 24-18, but the Golden Eagles took set three 25-18.
In set four, the Golden Eagles came out on fire and took a 4-1 lead. Cervantes saw a hole in La Sierra’s defense and brought the Red Hawks within two. Pickett’s powerful kill put the score at 13-5. Lombardi had a big kill to give the Lady Red Hawks some momentum. The Golden Eagles had a big ace, forcing Simpson to take a timeout to settle down. Freshman Ashley Job came into the game and got a kill, bringing the score to 8-18. Belleville had a nice kill to bring the score to 10-20. The Red Hawks began to capitalize on the Golden Eagles’ errors. Pickett was serving while Lombardi had a big block, but it was not enough. La Sierra took set four 17-25 and the match 3-1.
