Red Hawks Lose Home Opener to Oregon Tech

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s volleyball team had their home opener against the Oregon Tech Owls on Sept. 14. The Red Hawks lost in four sets (22-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-21).
The first game started off with a kill from Red Hawk senior Jamie Pickett. OIT bounced right back and took the lead, until blocks from senior Jessica Lombardi and sophomore Aimee Belleville gave the Red Hawks a spark. OIT started to pull away with many strong kills, but Simpson got some power after Belleville’s kill that put the score to 23-17. The Red Hawks’ front row played very strong at the end of the game, but OIT pulled through to win the first set 25-22.
Set two started off neck-and-neck and the lead switched numerous times, until junior Jazmin Wallace’s long service period brought the score to 13-12. Then lefty freshman Ashley Cervantes had a tricky, but powerful kill to put the Red Hawks up 15-12. Simpson kept the intensity up and began to pull away with big kills from Wallace and Pickett. OIT used one of their timeouts to try and gain composure, but the Red Hawks came out even more on fire. Senior Victoria Furze had a powerful kill assisted by Cervantes, and a dig by Wallace to put Simpson at game point (24-20). Then Pickett put the game away with a powerful kill to give Simpson their first home set win of the season.
In set three, OIT came out with a vengeance and took the lead. The Red Hawks were playing very scrappy but could not put the ball away. Coach Kirst called a timeout at 9-17, and Lombardi came out with a powerful kill. Pickett then had a great dig, which resulted in a strong kill from Furze and brought the score to 22-14. OIT’s front row went to work and closed out the set with a 17-25 win. The Owls led the match 2-1.
Set four started off with an OIT net, so Red Hawks took the lead. Simpson continued to battle against the tough OIT front row, but the Red Hawks fought back with hits from Furze and junior Chelsea White. There was a long rally, but OIT put it away to tie the game at 6-6. Then sophomore Kelsey Reibsamen’s kill gave the Red Hawks a 7-6 lead. The game continued to go back-and-forth, and Lombardi had a powerful kill followed by a block to put the Red Hawks up 12-10. The game continued to be a battle until Simpson called a timeout at 16-19. Simpson’s Belleville had a strong hit to give the Red Hawks some momentum, and then junior Michelle Aleong came in to serve and had a deep corner kill to bring them within one at 21-22. Red Hawks did not score again, and OIT took the set at 25-21 and the game 3-1.
The Red Hawks go back on the road to play Chico State on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
