Red Hawks Struggle at Vanguard Classic

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s volleyball team competed in the Vanguard Class on Sept. 5-6. After dropping their opening match against The Master’s College on Sept. 5, the Red Hawks faced Hope International University. The Royals defeated Simpson 26-24, 25-11, and 25-22. In the first set, the Red Hawks battled with Hope International, but back-to-back attack errors hurt their chances of winning the set. In set two, Simpson was unable to regroup, dropping the set 25-11. The Red Hawks improved in set three but still fell short 25-22.

Senior Jamie Pickett led the team with eight kills, two aces, and 11 digs. Freshman Ashley Cervantes led with 20 assists.

In match three on Sept. 6, the Red Hawks fell to Mayville State University from North Dakota in three straight sets (25-22, 25-19, and 25-18). Junior Elizabeth Volz led the team with 11 kills, Cervantes had a season-high 29 assists, and Pickett followed with 15 digs.

In the final game of the Vanguard Classic, the Red Hawks faced tournament host Vanguard University. The Lions defeated Simpson 25-17, 25-9 and 25-11. Volz led with seven kills, Cervantes had with 16 assists, and Pickett finished with nine digs.

The Red Hawks will play one more match in Southern California against Bethesda University at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7.
