Red Hawks Beat Rival for First Home Win
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s volleyball team hosted rival William Jessup University on Sept. 23. The Red Hawks came away with their first home win of the season by defeating the Warriors in four sets (19-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-19).
The first set was a battle until Jessup started to pull away and took an 11-9 lead. After the Warriors went on a four-point run and Simpson committed some errors, Coach Kirst called a timeout to get the Red Hawks back on track. The Lady Red Hawks responded with two quick points, and a huge kill by sophomore Aimee Belleville put the Red Hawks within five. Jessup did not let that faze them and went up 22-13, forcing Simpson to call another timeout. A kill from freshman setter Ashley Cervantes sparked a Simpson run, but it wasn’t enough as Jessup closed out the first set with a 19-25 victory.
In the second set, the Lady Warriors came out a little rattled, and the Lady Red Hawks capitalized on Jessup’s by going on a 3-0 run with a big block by senior Jessica Lombardi. But then the Warriors came back and tied the set at 6-6. It was a back-and-fourth battle until Simpson started to pull away and the Jessup coach called a timeout. After the timeout, Belleville and Lombardi got some big kills to get the Simpson going. The Lady Warriors continued to fight, but Lombardi had a huge block and junior Chelsea White had a powerful kill to make it game point. The Lady Red Hawks pulled out the victory on a Cervantes ace, winning 25-23.
The intensity of set two carried into set three, with kills coming from White, senior Victoria Furze, and Lombardi. Furze came out on fire in set three, getting back-to-back kills to give the Lady Red Hawks the 7-3 lead. Both teams played some very scrappy ball with some long rallies until senior Jamie Pickett’s kill put the Red Hawks up 14-7. Key digs from junior Jazmin Wallace and Cervantes, a block from White and Lombardi, and a powerful kill from Belleville assisted by Cervantes contributed to the Red Hawks’ 25-14 set victory.
Simpson came out strong in the fourth set and went up 4-1 on another big kill from Furze. Cervantes had a kill to give the team even more intensity. Jessup took a time out when the Lady Red Hawks went up 12-5, but Simpson did not falter and another big kill from Belleville put them up 14-8. There were several long rallies, one of which was ended by Furze’s powerful kill to put the Hawks up 19-14. Then the Warriors took another timeout when the Red Hawks took a 22-16 lead, but it was too late. The Red Hawks closed out the game on a Wallace serve and a Jessup hitting error to win 25-19.
The Lady Red Hawks will start conference play by hosting La Sierra University at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3.
