Red Hawks lose in overtime to Keelhaulers

VALLEJO, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s basketball team traveled to Vallejo, Calif., to play conference opponent CSU Maritime on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 5:30 p.m. In a dog fight of a battle, the Red Hawks lost 97-90 in overtime.
In the first half, Simpson came out aggressive offensively, and three back-to-back baskets from Karley Menez gave the Red Hawks a 20-7 lead. Simpson became content with the lead, and the Keelhaulers made their way back into the game before going into the half ahead 40-33.
In the second half, both teams continued to exchange baskets and the biggest lead was seven. Menez came in clutch within the last seconds of the game as her steal and free throws put the Red Hawks up by three points with 30 seconds left. With Maritime in possession of the ball, Javier Brantley made a wide open three-pointer to tie the game at 78 and send the game into overtime.
Overtime possessed no less of a battle than regulation. But with Maritime getting hot from the three-point line, the Red Hawks were unable to stop the Keelhaulers, resulting in a 97-90 loss.
The Red Hawks were led offensively by Nichole Jones, who finished with 22 points. Tiffany Aaserude finished with 20 points, Menez earned her first double-double of the season finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Kaity Hahn finished with 13 points.
Simpson will prepare for their next game at UC Merced at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan.30.
