Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s basketball team opened the 2014-2015 season at home against Corban University on Oct. 25. The Warriors defeated the Red Hawks 57-48.
Simpson came out strong in the first half, with the first points of the game scored by freshman Erin Selleck. The Lady Red Hawks and Warriors battled back-and-fourth until Simpson’s three post players got in foul trouble. Simpson kept fighting, but the Warriors used their bench and size to go up 33-15 at half time.
The Lady Red Hawks came out with full strength and started to chip away at the Warriors’ lead, with points from sophomore Esther Wofford and senior Katie Lenik to make the score 35-19. Around the 11-minute mark, the Red Hawks started to make a run after Coach Derrick Pringle called a timeout. Wofford came out of the timeout and scored a quick basket and got fouled. Simpson was down by 19 but got within 10 after sophomore Brook Blaisdell made two free throws. The Warriors continued to battle with the Red Hawks and did not give up their lead. The Red Hawks got within seven, after Corban missed free throw and junior Hannah Saylor made a three off an assist from senior Rianna Gallardo. That was the last time the Lady Red Hawks scored, and Corban won 57-48.
The Lady Red Hawks play again at home against Oregon Institute of Technology on Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.
