Cal Pac Tournament Preview: No. 1 Menlo vs. No. 4 Simpson

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's women's basketball team is playing the Menlo College Oaks on Saturday, March 1 at 6 p.m., in round one of the California Pacific Conference Championship Tournament held in Atherton, Calif. Simpson is the No. 4 seed, and Menlo is the No. 1 seed. The winner of this game advances to the championship game on Monday, March 3 at 6 p.m. The winner of the championship game earns the right to play in the NAIA National Tournament on March 12-13 in Sioux City, Iowa. The other teams participating in the championship tournament are No. 2 La Sierra University and No. 3 William Jessup University.
The format for the championship tournament is different this year. Only the top four teams qualified for a spot in the tournament, which will be held at a predetermined location. In the past, all teams qualified for the championship tournament, with the higher seeded teams hosting home games.
No. 1 Menlo College
Over the course of the season, Menlo has proven to be an offensive and defensive powerhouse. The Oaks are led by Jolise Limcaco, Laurel Donnenwirth, and Vanessa D’Amico. Limcaco leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per outing, and leads the conference by dishing out 5.9 assists per game. Donnenwirth is a double-double machine, averaging 14.4 points and grabbing a conference-best 10.3 rebounds per game. D'Amico averages 13.4 points per game and is nationally ranked in total 3-point field goals made (80) and 3-point field goals made per game (2.9).
No. 4 Simpson University
Simpson earned their spot in the championship tournament with big wins over William Jessup, UC Merced, and Cal Maritime. Nichole Jones leads with Red Hawks in scoring, averaging 13.5 points per game. She is also the team’s second leading rebounder, grabbing 4.2 per game. Jones also has the conference’s second-best record for steals per game, averaging 2.72. Esther Wofford (9.2 points per game) and Tiffany Aaserude (8.6) have proved to be three-point-shooting threats. Madison Cox adds a presence in the paint for the Red Hawks and averages 5.6 points and rebounds per game.
