Red Hawks win on the road

Simpson University Sports News

MERCED, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s basketball team traveled to Merced, Calif., to play the UC Merced Bobcats on Thursday, Jan. 30. The Red Hawks were able to finish out the game with a 66-54 road win.

Due to a late arrival and a shorter warm-up than usual, the Red Hawks started the first half slowly, and the Bobcats quickly took a five-point lead. Finally finding their rhythm in the last 10 minutes of the half, the Red Hawks closed the gap and gained a 30-29 lead with 30 seconds left. Merced scored quickly on a jump shot to regain the lead with six seconds left, but a half court buzzer beater from Kaity Hahn gave the Red Hawks a 33-31 half time lead.

Coming off of Hahn's big shot, Simpson's momentum carried over into the second half as defensive stops and ball movement allowed the Red Hawks to get easy baskets and leave with a 66-54 victory.

The Red Hawks were led by Nichole Jones, who finished with a career-high 30 points. Esther Wofford finished with nine points and nine rebounds, and Madison Cox finished with seven points.

Simpson is 3-4 in the California Pacific Conference and will prepare for their final conference road game against Menlo College on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 5:30 p.m.
