Red Hawks lose conference opener

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s basketball team started out California Pacific Conference play with a 77-56 loss to rival William Jessup University on Saturday, Jan. 4.
The Red Hawks started the first two minutes of the game slowly. William Jessup’s Cara Watts capitalized on Simpson’s slow start by hitting back-to-back three-pointers. Tiffany Aaserude and Esther Wofford led the Red Hawks offensively and had 13 of the Red Hawks’ 31 first half points. The Warriors led halftime 34-31.
In the second half, Simpson struggled defensively as their 2-3 and 3-2 zone couldn’t stop the Warriors, who shot 49% from the 3-point line. Lack of hustle showed as the Red Hawks got outworked resulting in a 77-56 loss.
Simpson was led by Aaserude’s 18 points and three assists. Nichole Jones helped with 15 points, four assists, and seven rebounds. Big minutes were played by Melanie Shank, who finished with 8 points, one assist, and one steal.
The Red are preparing for their game against conference leader Menlo College on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
