Lady Red Hawks Win Border War

Simpson University Sports News

MEDFORD, Ore. - The Simpson University women’s golf team captured its first win of the season at the Border Wary hosted by the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) at the Centennial Golf Club in Medford, Ore. Men’s and women’s teams from Washington, Oregon and California attended the annual, two-day tournament.

“The ladies played very well, and I couldn’t be more proud,” said head golf coach Mark Mezzano. “We are well on our way to an at-large bid for Nationals. We just have to play well in Portland.”

Red Hawk sophomore Serina Castillo won the event as an individual. Her two-day total of 12-over-par gave Simpson a 13-stroke advantage over the College of Idaho. Finishing second, with back-to-back 80’s, was sophomore Christina Phelps. Junior Katie Miller finished in 7th place with scores of 83-87, and sophomore Brooke Mejorado tied for 10th, shooting 87-84. Freshman Marissa Castillo finished in 15th place with scores of 96-88.

“It goes to show you hard work and playing your own game will put you on-top of the leader board,” said assistant golf coach Joe Pantoja.
