KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - The Simpson University women’s golf team finished third at the Oregon Tech Invitational, just eight strokes behind the College of Idaho. Running Y golf course in Klamath Falls, Ore., set the course at 5976 yards for the 54-hole competition.

Sophomore Christina Phelps led the Lady Red Hawks, shooting 242 and finishing ninth out of 24 competitors. Sophomore Serina Castillo finished in 12th place and turned in a three round total of 250. Freshman Marissa Castillo finished in 18th place with 272 and recorded her first hole-in-one.

Assistant coach Joe Pantoja was greenside and watched what ended up being the perfect swing. “Castillo took it in stride as if it was just another day on the links,” he said.

Junior Katie Miller posted 92-93-92 to finish in 19th place. Sophomore Brooke Mejorado’s finished 20th and shot 87 for the third round, 13 strokes better than her previous day’s score.

Coach Mark Mezzano was pleased with their performance given it was the first event of the season. “We will continue to work on every aspect of the game in an effort to bring in lower scores,” he said.

The Red Hawks will compete at the annual 36-hole Border War at Centennial Golf Club in Medford, Ore., on Sept. 27.
