Lady Red Hawk Records Hole-in-One at Cascade Conference Opener

Simpson University Sports News

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - Simpson University freshman Marissa Castillo from Hollister, Calif., recorded her first hole-in-one just 24 holes into her collegiate golfing career. During the second round of competition at the Cascade Conference Opener at Running Y Ranch, Castillo stepped onto the 15th tee and aced the 185-yard par-3.

Simpson golf team assistant coach Joe Pantoja, standing near the green watching Castillo, started yelling as he watched the ball rolling toward the pin. “She was picking up her tee and looked up just in time to see it fall,” he said.

Later in the round, Castillo told head coach Mark Mezzano about the hole-in-one. “I was shocked, I thought she was pulling my leg,” Mezzano said. “People go through a lifetime of golf and never experience the joy of a hole-in-one.”

Castillo went on to record a second round score of 85, just five strokes behind her older sister, sophomore Serina Castillo.

“We’re excited about Marissa’s potential,” Mezzano said. “She’s very coachable and level-headed during competition and will no doubt continue to shoot lower scores.”
