REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women's soccer team hosted their final home game of the season, where they honored the 12 seniors who were participating in their final match at home. The opponent for the Red Hawks was the Lions from Soka University. The game was a closely fought contest, and the Red Hawks fell just short, losing 1-0.
The Red Hawks opened the scoring opportunities early, when Lacey Reen got in behind the Lion defense. Her shot was blocked, with Kyra Nevard following up just missing wide left. The Red Hawks continued to push the envelope and were rewarded with a penalty kick, which Bethany Len failed to convert. The score remained level heading into the half time break.
In the second half, the game would turned very physical ,with both teams trying to gain control of the flow of the game. The Lions were dealt a blow when Zoe Witt was sent off midway through the second half, forcing them to play a man down the rest of the game. The Lions dug deep and played better in the face of this challenge. They found their breakthrough when Lauren Broker found the back of the net. The Red Hawks continued to look for the equalizer and came close. Reen, Leah O'Halloran, Kendra Kaiserman and Marijke de Hoop all narrowly missed their opportunities.
The Red Hawks now head on the road for three games to complete their season with games in Lancaster, Calif., Prescott, Ariz., and Anaheim, Calif.
